The exhibition titled ‘VKHUTEMAS 100. The School of Avant-Garde’ opened at the Museum of Moscow on November 10. The large-scale exposition included photos and graphic works of students of the Faculties of Design and Photography of IGUMO as well as those by students of the Design College of MKIK.
The exhibition is timed to the centenary of the VKHUTEMAS, the main design institution of the country. The VKHUTEMAS determined the path of design education in Russia in the 20th century.
Separate sections of the exhibition are devoted to the prehistory of the VKHUTEMAS school and the reform of art education, the main department and its four disciplines, production and art faculties, the dissolution of the university, and its future fate.
The subjects of the exhibition included paintings, graphic works, sculptures, architectural projects, models, industrial and graphic design, porcelain objects, textile objects, and furniture created by the VKHUTEMAS students.
The exposition also included works of modern institutes continuing the traditions of the Higher Art and Technical Studios in education. IGUMO and MKIK were among them.
Specially for that event, students of the creative fields of study of IGUMO and MKIK designed a series of graphic works and photos. The artistic experiments of the avant-garde epoch found their reflection in their works.
IGUMO also presented a zine with creative exercises based on the methods developed by the VKHUTEMAS professors. Elizaveta Zemlyanova, Dean of the Design College of MKIK and Curator of the Faculties of Design and Photography of IGUMO, created that collection book.
