The Institute for the Humanities and Information Technologies (IGUMO) keeps on carrying out the ‘Soviet Modernism. From: and To:’ project. The eighth exhibition devoted to Russian and Soviet modernist architecture opened on August 18, 2021. During the first week of the academic year, IGUMO students visited the Belyaevo Gallery and saw the presented works.
This is the eighth session of the project carried out by students and lecturers of the Faculty of Design of the Institute for the Humanities and Information Technologies (IGUMO) and the International College for Arts and Communication (MKIK).
The first part of the exhibition is traditionally devoted to the Izmaylovo District. The second one is related to the Belyaevo District where the gallery is located. That is a very interesting place in terms of architecture. Kuba Snopek, a Polish architect, wrote a book devoted to the district and called Belyaevo Forever. He also proposed to include Belyaevo in the UNESCO list.
The district is also interesting thanks to the fact that Dmitry Prigov, an outstanding artist, lived there. The exhibits in the Japanese style are the references to his works. The thing is that Dmitry Prigov devoted an entire book to travelling in Japan.
The concept of the exhibition is also based on the image of the Moscow Metro. It connects two parts of the exhibition devoted to Belyaevo’s and Izmaylovo’s architecture. Similar architectural objects with an identical history are the second point of contact between the dormitory districts. The third unifying element is based on a coincidence. In 1974, Belyaevo District was the venue of the Bulldozer Exhibition where the works of non-conformist artists were destroyed by the police. Two weeks later, the authorities made concessions and allowed to host an exhibition in the Izmaylovo Park.
The curators of the ‘Soviet Modernism. From: and To:’ are Anastasia Petrova, Dean of the Architecture College of MKIK, and Elizaveta Zemlyanova, Dean of the Faculties of Photography and Design of IGUMO.
