Pavel Ivanov’s Workshop: Photo Stocks as a Way of Earning

Students of the Faculties of Photography and Design of the Institute for the Humanities and Information Technologies (IGUMO) visited Pavel Ivanov’s workshop. They learned about how to make money from photo stocks. The expert shared his own experience and talked about the peculiarities of working on different online platforms of that kind.

The photographer demonstrated images that people buy actively and use on advertising banners, in shopping centres, and on the websites of various brands. As a rule, Pavel Ivanov takes pictures of people. For him, it is fundamentally important to make sure that models transmit positive emotions and that their photos can’t be used in advertisements with ambiguous contexts. To promote their products and services, well-known brands buy such photos more often.

Pavel Ivanov explained the process of finding models and shooting in addition to the kind of contracts making it possible to avoid legal problems. He also told IGUMO students whether it is profitable to rent a photo studio and hire models and makeup artists.

During the meeting, students learned about different things: the scale and quality of photos affecting their price, tags that can promote photos better, the process of withdrawing money from online platforms, and the difference of editorial and commercial formats.

At the end of his workshops, Pavel Ivanov showed the contracts that students need to place with their works on photo stocks. He also shared insider information on how much a photographer can earn per image.

Photo stocks are not the main source of income for the photographer. For many years, Pavel Ivanov has been taking pictures of IGUMO students and key moments in the Institute’s life. Social media of IGUMO in addition to news feed and dozens of photo albums on its website are filled with his works.
