The Institute for the Humanities and Information Technologies (IGUMO) jointly with the Bauhaus Dessau held a three-day online intensive course titled ‘Bauhaus Open Studios – Teaching Models Refresher Course and Methods of Design Teaching in Russia’. More than 50 teachers and designers from different regions of Russia took part in the event.
The first joint online course dedicated to the Bauhaus and the VKHUTEMAS, two influential design schools, took place in autumn 2020. It received a positive response from the participants. This was the reason to launch the second intensive course with an expanded speaker list and a new programme, which included three thematic blocks.
Acquainting with the Bauhaus
On the first day of the intensive course, the researchers of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation named Katja Klaus and Filip Žák presented the methodical materials based on the propaedeutics course of the Bauhaus professors. The educational section was supplemented by an online tour of the spaces of the Bauhaus school delivered by Daria Sorokina.
Acquainting with the VKHUTEMAS
The second day started with a lecture by Olga Baranova, art historian and curator of the Faculty of Design of IGUMO. The expert spoke about the development of avant-garde movements in Russia and the origins of the renowned design school. After that, Evgenia Suprutskaya, Dean of the Journalism and Publishing College of MKIK, delivered a workshop on creation of zines. The second day ended with a virtual tour of the historical heritage of the VHKUTEMAS provided by the Moscow Through the Eyes of an Engineer project.
Legacy of the Bauhaus and the VKHUTEMAS Design Schools
The third day of the course was opened with a lecture by Vladimir Runge who is a legendary figure in Soviet design. Then the participants got acquainted with the peculiarities of Soviet architecture during the meeting with Anastasia Petrova, Dean of the Architecture College of MKIK and Head of TZAM Architects. The intensive ended with a lecture on the heritage of avant-garde photography by Vadim Gushchin, photographer and curator of the Faculty of Photography of IGUMO.
In three days, participants of the intensive course have gained unique knowledge about the models of teaching design and opportunities of their application in pedagogical practice. According to the results of the testing, the teachers will receive advanced training certificates.
