The Faculty of Design of the Institute for the Humanities and Information Technologies (IGUMO) hosted a meeting devoted to auctions of contemporary art. Ulyana Savich, designer of the Garage museum, artist, and curator, talked about how young artists can sell their works and why they do so and shared what art objects are more often bought by collectors and viewers.

Ulyana Savich shared her experience in organising the Liquidation auction of young contemporary art. The auction has two goals: to integrate aspiring artists into the art community and to attract the attention of wide audience to contemporary art.

The curators of the Liquidation auction find it important to make the exhibition site and the subsequent auction a space for acquiring new experience. They pay much attention to the visual solutions of the event and the architecture of the exhibition space.

In December 2021, the Liquidation auction took place at Winzavod. There was a white hall with its walls divided into cells, like those of a calendar. Thus, the works were separated from one another. The visitors entered the hall through a narrow white corridor with strobing light. They seemed to be inside a calendar and could not see the whole of it while standing on a single point.

Each artwork at the exhibition was dedicated to the reimagining of the events of 2021. The following auction could be perceived as a symbol of zeroing and shifting to a new time period.

The social media also adopted the project’s visual solution. The Liquidation auction’s curators found that stylistic unity an important criterion.

Ulyana Savich told the Design students in detail how to find a venue for the auction, what principles are used when selecting works, and what pieces of art are most successful.

The Institute for the Humanities and Information Technologies has its own Gallery. The first auction of student artworks will take place there very soon. At the meeting with Ulyana Savich, the young authors learned how to present their art objects and to introduce themselves as artists.
