Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and IGUMO Launch Contest for Teachers

IGUMO and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation launch a joint educational project in February 2021. The programme is an advanced training course worked out specifically for Russian design teachers and teachers of creative disciplines. The project will be carried out in an online format and will be available for residents of all cities and regions of Russia.

The idea of launching the professional development course appeared during the implementation of another joint project of IGUMO and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation. In October 2020, there was an intensive training course for teachers of creative disciplines in Russia called ‘Bauhaus Open Studios - Teaching Models’. The main goal of the project was to popularise cultural heritage and teaching methods of two remarkable schools of design and architecture: Germany’s Bauhaus and the Soviet Union’s VKHUTEMAS.

The intensive course caused a great positive response from the teachers. However, despite the programme’s richness, the project’s format did not presuppose a deep immersion into the topic. That is why the event not only got a continuation but also turned into a full-fledged further education course for teachers of creative disciplines at the request of many participants.

The further education course includes a three-day extensive educational programme. Experts from the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and leading lecturers of creative disciplines from IGUMO will be the mentors of the project.

In addition to main lectures on cultural heritage and pedagogical methods of the Bauhaus and the VKHUTEMAS, the programme will include several thematic blocks.

One part of the course will be devoted to the art of photography and the impact of the Bauhaus and the VKHUTEMAS activities on the development of this field. Vadim Gushchin, curator of the Faculty of Photography of IGUMO, member of the Union of Artists of Russia, and the author of more than 40 personal exhibitions will be the expert of this ‘photographic’ educational block. He will talk about the main discoveries of the schools in photography and share his personal experience in applying their pedagogical methods in his practice.

The course will pay special attention to architecture. Course participants will learn more about the enormous heritage of schools and their impact on modern architecture. Experts will talk about existing practices and teaching methods in this field. Anastasia Petrova, architect, Dean of the Architecture College of MKIK, and member of the Creative Union of Moscow Designers, will share her experience and knowledge.

Elizaveta Zemlyanova, Dean of the Faculties of Design and Photography of IGUMO and member of the Moscow Union of Artists, and Olga Baranova, art researcher, member of the Russian Philosophical Society, and curator of the Faculty of Design of IGUMO, will tell the course participants about applying the methods of the Bauhaus and the VKHUTEMAS in design teaching.

The course will also use the practice of creating zines. This time, participants of the project will get all necessary knowledge and skills for the development of their own methodological manuals. Evgenia Suprutskaya, Dean of the Journalism and Publishing College of MKIK and graphic designer, will deliver part of the course with practical recommendations.

This year marks exactly 100 years since the opening of the VKHUTEMAS. In this regard, experts plan to pay special attention to the heritage of the Soviet design school within the course.

The VKHUTEMAS had a huge impact on the Soviet and modern Russian design. That makes the school’s legacy especially interesting to study and research. The invited experts of this block of the program include bright representatives of Soviet design and followers of the VKHUTEMAS ideas. Negotiations on cooperation with one of the famous artists from the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Industrial Design (VNIITE) are already underway.

Virtual tours of the Bauhaus and the VKHUTEMAS heritage are also awaiting the course participants.

At the end of the course, participants will undergo testing to obtain a further training certificate.

Development of this project is an important step towards the popularisation of the cultural heritage of two remarkable design schools of the 20th century. Their teachers used unique and effective educational methods. Today, we must not only preserve them but also replicate them in the professional environment.

Moreover, the project is aimed at strengthening intercultural communication between the two countries. It is especially symbolic in the Year of Germany in Russia. It should be noted that the cooperation born in 2020 has already grown into warm friendship and promising joint work. Probably, the projects of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and IGUMO will be shifted into offline space in the near future. But before that, we will see you online in February!

To let everyone immerse into the atmosphere of the October intensive course, the Faculties of Design and Photography of IGUMO have prepared a special film. Elizaveta Zemlyanova, Olga Baranova, Vadim Gushchin, and Pavel Ivanov took part in its creation.
