Last Wednesday Irina Karimova, editor-in-chief of the web portal FashionEducation.ru, director of a fashion journalism school and winner of the national fashion award “Golden Spindle 2014” in the category “Journalist, editor and publisher”, visited IGUMO and conducted a workshop for future fashion journalists. But she wasn’t the only guest at IGUMO. Sergey Seryogin, IGUMO graduate, attended Irina’s workshop and told the students that the previous workshop, held three years ago, had inspired him so much that after graduating he started working as a journalist in a fashion magazine. By the way, Irina herself dropped her career of a marketer after having met Tatyana Vorozhtsova, dean of the faculty of journalism at IGUMO.
Irina gave the students many useful tips. She told them about the way fashion weeks are usually organized in Milan, Paris and Moscow. “A fashion week is not all entertainment”, Irina says. Sometimes fashion journalists have to work from morning till night without rest. She also mentioned what a true fashion journalist should have to always succeed. To become a true fashion journalist, you should be broad-minded, well versed in professional terminology, purposeful, hard-working, organized and disciplined. It’s also vital for a journalist to meet deadlines. Speaking at least two foreign languages is no less important and beneficial.
What’s more, Irina shared the secret of a successful interview: the key is to show the person being interview to the best advantage. She advised remaining honest and open with celebrities. She also warned the students about the questions they should never ask and told them what their articles should consist of.
Finally, she reminded that being a journalist you should always develop your skills.
