Like education

«Like education» is a joint professional-academic project implemented by three creative departments of IGUMO, namely Design, Photography and Advertising and PR. The students of these faculties make creative groups as leading advertising agencies do: each group consists of students of the Faculty of Advertising and PR, who conceive a creative idea, while the designers and photographers shape it into social posters. The groups hold weekly meetings with the supervisors of this project: E.Melikhova and E.Volynkina.

The social posters will be brought to public review at the end of the term (November, 25-29, 2013). The visitors will be able to put their «likes» into the ballot boxes under each work, and also provide support through social networks. The best works will be printed out and displayed in comprehensive schools, the appropriate arrangements being provided by the students of the Faculty of PR.

The project is aimed at enabling the students to upgrade their professional skills, practise teamwork and stimulate creative thinking. Importantly, a real business case is modelled whereby students with different background are brought together to attain a common goal. This is a valuable experience promoting both their professional growth and business connections.

Calendar Design

As a part of this project, the students of the Faculty of Design create illustrations for the corporate calendar of IGUMO. The aim of the task is to design the illustration displaying the students’ impression of their institute. All the students of the Faculty of Design are taking part in the project, but only top 12 of all the participants’ works will be presented in the calendar.

The project represents a modelled order from a customer, which has to be performed in time and match each detail of the order. The project’s supervisor is the head of the chair of design E.Zemlyanova, who holds regular meetings with the students to direct their creativity. This project upgrades professional skills and develops students’ flair.

Partnership with AST Publishing House

The partnership of the Faculty of Design with AST - one of the leading publishing houses of Russia - allows students to get real professional tasks and put them into practice. Students gain rewarding experience while working on current projects with the representatives of the publishing house, get the first recognition and even monetary reward. Upon completion of each project, the students get a Participant’s Certificate, an excellent bonus addition to their professional portfolio.

It should be specially noted that the tasks accomplished by the students provided by AST originate in the regular course of business; therefore the results are applied by the publishing house for commercial purposes.

Participation in such professional-educating projects allows students to get the unique knowledge and master skills which will help them to develop professionally, in particular, to communicate with a customer and to create unique products.

The first project was completed in February 2013, when the Faculty of Design received a creative task from AST to design greeting cards with quotes from Paulo Coelho’s new book "Manuscript Found in Accra." The postcards were to display the author’s name, the book title and, optionally, elements of the book cover. The information about the book, the quotes and annotations were provided by the publisher. According to AST, the best work was performed by Yulia Fedorova; however, the publishing house took the decision to buy copyrights for the works of all the students, since they all met the demands of the client.

Master classes with Zurab Tsereteli

Zurab Tsereteli is an outstanding modern artist and sculptor. The students of the Faculty of Design attend his master classes in his atelier in Prechistenka Street.

Tsereteli’s master classes give the students of the faculty a perfect chance to communicate with the master, to create works of art together with the sculptor, to get inspired by his paintings and sculptures and by the general atmosphere of the atelier during the classes and excursions about the Art Gallery.

DOCA (Day of Contemporary Art)

DOCA (Day of Contemporary Art) is an ambitious annual art event, which unites all the creative faculties of IGUMO. In 2013 DOCA took place on April 20. The next DOCA is to take place on April 19, 2014.

The participation in the art event allows the students of Design to get an insight into gallery business and into the process of creation of various art-objects. In the course of work they learn how to design an event according to the order, and develop the ability to cooperate with other creative professionals. Thus they master skills and knowledge crucial for personal fulfilment in professional activity.

Screened History of World Art

This event is aimed at demonstrating specially chosen feature films and documentaries on various trends in art with a discussion to follow.

The project goals are to develop the world view, to form the students’ aesthetic and visual sense and a designer’s way of thinking, to acquaint the students with various trends in art, to develop communication skills and ability to convey a message to the audience, as well as to give a close-up of the world classic directors’ works.

Interactive Trainings

The experts of the Faculty of Design offered their students interactive trainings which developed the skills of prompt and clear explanation of different words to their team applying a broad variety of methods, such as pantomime, using synonyms or drawing. Such trainings also took place at other faculties.

These training sessions are set to develop creativity, teamwork skills and communicative competence.
