ïîäïèñàòüñÿMKIK continues to develop international cooperation in the field of education and culture. In October, our college and the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation held a three-day online workshop aimed at exploring the pedagogical heritage of the Bauhaus and the VKHUTEMAS as well as innovative concepts of the design schools.
The event, which was held in Russia for the first time, was attended by 160 specialists from Russia, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan: teachers of art schools, colleges and universities, and representatives of creative professions.
The project was implemented within the framework of the Year of Germany in Russia. The theme was especially relevant because of two important dates for the world art community. In 2019, the Bauhaus School celebrated its 100th anniversary, and the VKHUTEMAS celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2020.
Within the framework of the intensive course, the participants were offered to take part in lectures, virtual excursions, and practical exercises based on unique methodological materials of the German Bauhaus and the Soviet VKHUTEMAS.

The Soviet design school of VKHUTEMAS was represented on equal footing with the German school of Bauhaus. The history of the two schools is closely interrelated. They were similar in their approaches to education and innovative view of the future of design and architecture.
The first two days of the course were dedicated to the impact of Bauhaus on the development of design education as well as the history of cultural exchange between Germany and Russia since 1919. A virtual tour of the Bauhaus Dessau space and a workshop on its preliminary course module were organised for the participants.
On the third day, together with the teachers of the MKIK Colleges of Design and Photography, the participants explored the experience of VKHUTEMAS as an innovative Soviet school in the field of design and architecture.
Olga Baranova, a lecturer at the MKIKCollege of Design, presented a lecture on the most notable avant-garde movements that had influenced the creation of the unique VKHUTEMAS school and the formation of the Soviet design. Emphasis was placed on the methodology of teaching in the Moscow educational institution, in particular the proprietary course, which became the basis of all design disciplines.
Within the intensive course, Elizaveta Zemlyanova, Dean of the Design College of MKIK, developed a zine with creative exercises based on the methods of the teachers of the VKHUTEMAS.
The training manual was created as a result of a study of unique sources on the topic and is intended for use in pedagogical activities. The zine consists of tasks in four main disciplines: colour, graphics, space, and volume.
The section about the VKHUTEMAS was completed by the online-excursion delivered by Ksenia Grigorieva, art critic, tour guide of the ‘Moscow Through the Eyes of an Engineer’ project.
Participants of the intensive course took a virtual tour of the building of MARKHI, which was created on the basis of the Faculty of Architecture of the VKHUTEMAS. They also saw a vivid example of constructivism architecture: the House of Narkomfin.
Participants highly assessed the usefulness of the material as well as the interesting online learning formats.
The development of cultural projects at the international level is a priority for MKIK. The College cooperates with international educational and cultural institutions through joint projects. Such interaction opens up new opportunities for MKIK students. They present their ideas on international platforms as well as travel within foreign internships to gain unique knowledge and experience.
